The Arch continued

I proceeded with the painting but did some others as well in the meantime. On Wednesdays it gets very noisy in the staircase, where my setup is, because it is in the vicinity of the museum restaurant where they have a weekly dinner. The other thing is taking photographs of the painting. I don´t like doing it!

But here it is!



Unfortunately I was at the Students Exhibition of the Viennese Art Academy the night before and in order to deal with the shown artwork I decided to get drunk. It seemed to me the only way to cope with contemporary art. ;-)

So I wasn´t as concentrated as I wanted to be and painted only the achitecture on the right side. Some people said I should leave the painting like it was but I think that I have to make the surrounding areas of the arch cooler and muted in order to make the focal point clearer. You can see it on the left side. The yellow tone of the underpainting is competing with the middle section.

This is the only photo I have taken in between because the light situation is not so good for taking photos.

The Whale finished?

I continued with the Whale and as the two friendly colleagues mentioned in the last post comments, I should keep the looseness of the two paintings I had started. The second sitting is always difficult, because I tend to become too cautious. But avoiding the problem is not solving it. So, what do you think?

Two promising starts

The following images show only stages of the work. I began these two Paintings on the same day and in first case it became so noisy in the staircase, in the second the light situation changed so much that I had to stop. I took this as an opputunity to show the painting process and to work longer on the paintings.

This shows the end of the second session where I tried to establish my focal point.

I began with a wash of Light Ocre and Cobalt Blue wherein I sketched the composition with Transparent Oxide Red and Ultramarine.



Here you see how important it is for successful painting to wear reflecting shoes.




This is the state at the end of the first session and I used more impasto and thicker paint.

Of Man and Ape continued

Don´t worry, I was painting in the museum, but I didn´t photograph the paintings. In December the Museum was crowded with tourists and sometimes it was very hard to concentrate. Now the new year has started and I will continue my work.

This time I painted in the staircase where these statues of famous scientists are and after I had finished the painting of Alexander von Humboldt, I did a quick one of the Ape.

Lost Head

This museum is such an enchanted place. In Winter when it is darker outside, the mood is very strange, because apart from the roaring school classes it is quiet and it seems like you are in a place where time stands still.
In this painting I used the palette knife exessively and I got carried away by it. I think that this produced a little too many sharp edges but it helped visualizing they showcases.

Towards the Light

After having struggled so much with the last painting, I finally got the clue by using troughout the painting the biggest possible brush. And that helped and brought things forward. The museum is very popular for the schools and therefore lots of kids pass by and sometimes their reactions are interesting. They say what they think.

Save in the Vitrine

With this one I continued to paint in the museum after having worked the summer outdoors. I struggled with the construction but finally achieved something. The size is 60x40 cm.

Two heads

This year I had started a painting project, which I am going to post frequently when the paintings are done. I am working on a series of paintings of the Museum of Natural History (Naturhistorisches Museum) in Vienna.

These two were the first ones I had executed in summer. Both are 40x30 cm, Oil on CanvasPanel.
