The end of the year | Das Ende des Jahres

This will be my last post for this year, after a real busy December. Every year I try not to get involved in all that Christmas hustle and I never succeed. Nevertheless I was very productive in the studio and fortunate to work with wonderful models. Here are my recent portrait drawings.

Nach einem sehr hektischen Dezember ist dies nun mein letzter Post in diesem Jahr. Jedes Jahr versuche ich mich nicht von dieser schrecklichen Weihnachtshektik anstecken zu lassen und es gelingt mir einfach nicht. Trotzdem war ich im Studio sehr produktiv und hatte das Glück mit wundervollen Modellen zu arbeiten. Hier sind meine letzten Portraits.

Open Studio | Offenes Atelier

For the ones of you who are in the area, I would like to invite you to the open studio on Saturday, 27.11.10 starting at 18:00 and Sunday, 28.11.10 from 11:00-18:00 in the Wipplingerstrasse 14, 3.Floor, 1010 Wien.

Seit September bin ich nun in meinem neuen Atelier in der Wipplingerstrasse. Somit ist es nun an der Zeit eine Eröffnungsfeier zu machen, bei der ich auch meine aktuellen Bilder präsentieren werde.

Am Samstag, 27.11.2010 ab 18:00 Uhr lade ich Euch recht herzlich in die Wipplingerstrasse 14/ 3. Stock, 1010 Wien ein. Das Ende ist offen und wer an diesen Abend keine Zeit haben sollte, der hat die Möglichkeit am Sonntag, 28.11.2010 von 11:00-18:00 Uhr im Atelier vorbeizukommen.

Because of the new studio I did some more studio works. I did the first painting already smaller, found the whole concept successful and I did a bigger version of it. I still struggle with doing a bigger painting from a small study. The big size recquires an entirely different painterly approach.

The two drawings will serve as studies for painted versions.

Wegen des neuen Atelier malte ich in letzter Zeit mehr Studio Bilder. Vom ersten Bild machte ich schon vor einiger Zeit eine kleine Version. Ich fand das Bild recht gelungen, so daß ich ein größeres Format malen wollte. Es immer noch schwierig für mich, kleinere Studien in grössere Formate zu übersetzen. Das größere Leinwand benötigt einen ganz anderen malerischen Vortrag.

Die beiden Zeichnungen sind Studien für Ölgemälde.

Some recent portraits | Einige aktuelle Portraits

Since spring I quite frequently painted portraits and recently with people from the Vienna Sketchgroup. The ones among you, who do portraits, know what a drag it is sometimes. It is not only the resemblance I like to capture. It is more the essence of that person.

Seit Frühling habe ich immer wieder Portraits gemalt und in jüngster Zeit zusammen mit Leuten der Vienna Sketchgroup. Diejenigen unter Euch, die sich ebenfalls dem Portrait widmen, wissen, was für eine Mühsal es manchmal ist. Es ist ja nicht nur die Ähnlichkeit, die es zu erreichen gilt, vielmehr ist es das Wesentliche einer Person.

Show and new Studio | Ausstellung und ein neues Atelier

The whole September I was busy moving to a new studio and preparing a show in Munich on the 1.10.2010. It will be a group show with two fellow Painters from Vienna, Bogdan Pascu and Walter Stobl at the Galerie Fuhrmann. If you are around this area you are invited to join us for the opening. Now my classes have started again and I am looking forward to the coming season.

Den ganzen September habe ich damit verbracht in ein neues Studio, in der Wiener Innenstadt, umzuziehen und eine Ausstellung am 1.10.2010 in München vorzubereiten. Es ist eine Gruppenausstellung mit zwei Wiener Malern, Bogdan Pascu und Walter Strobl in der Galerie Fuhrmann. Wer in der Gegend sein sollte, ist recht herzlich zu der Eröffnung eingeladen. Nun haben auch meine Malklassen wieder begonnen und ich freue mich schon auf die kommende Saison.

The Soccer Worldcup was on and therefore I was able to do an interiour with the colleagues who didn´t move at least for 45 min. To some part it was memorizing what I had seen and it is an incredible exercise. As promised I made Photoalbum where you can get a glimpse of the atmosphere.

Da gerade Fußball WM war, malte ich ein Interieur mit den Kollegen, die sich zumindest 45 Minuten nicht bewegten. Bis zu einem gewissen Grad habe ich Einiges aus dem Gedächtnis gemalt, was eine klasse Übung ist. Hier ist nun auch das angekündigte Fotoalbum.

Vienna Art Preview

I will be participating in a group show at Vienna Art Preview with a series of drawings related to the etching of Goya "El sueño de la razon produce monstruos". Here you see three of my works.

Ich werde mit einigen Zeichnungen, die sich auf Goyas Radierung "El sueño de la razon produce monstruos" beziehen, an einer Gruppenausstellung in der Vienna Art Preview teilnehmen. Abgebildet sind drei meiner Arbeiten.

Painters painted | Maler gemalt

During my plein air workshop in the Wachau last August I took the opportunity to paint my students while they were painting. It was very exciting to paint people who didn´t pose.

Während meines PleinAir Workshops in der Wachau letzten August nützte ich die Gelegenheit meine Schüler beim Malen zu malen. Es war sehr spannend Menschen zu malen, die nicht posierten.

In the crypt | In der Gruft

Some of you might remember the coffin I painted some time ago ( see the label Decorative Painting) and before that I did a series of paintings in the Michaeler Crypt. Alexandra, who was in charge of the crypt, taking care of the restoration and doing the guided tours, commissioned me to do a portrait of her in her favourite environment. As an information for the technique geeks amongst you, it is painted only with Titanium White, Burnt Siena and Ultramarine Blue.

Einige erinnern sich vielleicht noch an den Sarg, den ich vor einiger Zeit bemalt habe ( zu sehen unter dem Suchwort Decorative Painting). Davor malte ich eine Serie von Bildern in der Michaeler Gruft. Alexandra, die in jener Zeit, sich um die Gruft und deren Erhaltung kümmerte und Führungen machte, beauftragte mich Ihr Portrait in Ihrer natürlichen Umgebung zu malen. Als Information für die Technik Freaks unter Euch, für dieses Bild verwendete ich nur Titanweiss, Siena Gebrannt und Ultramarin Blau.

The Red Corsage pt 1 | Die Rote Corsage Teil 1

In order to stay tuned on my blog I am going to show the process of my latest adventure. In the previous post was the drawing of that painting. Here you see the two sketches and the beginning of the big canvas. I had forgotten to take a picture of the drawing which was first done in charcoal and restated with white and raw umber. The smaller sketch was done in order to make the color concept clearer.

Um wieder aktiver auf meinem Blog zu sein, zeige ich den Fortgang meines aktuellen Malabenteuers. Im vorhergegangenen Eintrag war die Zeichnung des Ölgemäldes. Hier kommen zwei Ölskizzen und der Beginn der großen Leinwand. Ich vergaß ein Foto des Anfangszustandes zu machen, indem ich die Zeichnung mit Kohle gemacht und dann später mit Weiß und Umbra Natur verstärkt habe. Die kleinere Skizze machte ich um mir das Farbkonzept besser zu veranschaulichen.

Back again | Wieder zurück

I must apologise for not being so present on my blog as I used to be, but sometimes life keeps other things in store for you than you would like or expect. It is a complete and utter miracle how people are able to paint every day.

My summer was miserable with loads of doubts and uncertainty concerning my work. I thought of my landscape paintings as being more commercial than the other work I did. But it wasn´t! Even the thought that something might sell better or not, is ridiculous. The only thing that counts is that whatever you paint, it has to be important to oneself and then will be true and strong.

Recently I am working mostly in my studio and enjoy painting and drawing people. My whole process is now slower and more laborious. And I do like it and hope you enjoy these drawings.

Ich möchte mich für meine längere Abwesenheit von meinem Blog entschuldigen. Manchmal hält einem das Leben Situationen bereit, die einen etwas aus der gewohnten Bahn werfen. Deswegen ist es mir rätselhaft, wie Leute jeden Tag malen können.

Ich hatte einen unerquicklichen Sommer mit vielen Unsicherheiten und Zweifeln, was meine Arbeit angeht. Ich dachte meine Landschaften wären etwas kommerzieller als die Gemälde, die ich sonst mache. Ich irrte! Jedoch schon der Gedanke, ob sich etwas verkauft oder nicht, ist an sich schon unsinnig. Das Wichtigste ist, egal was man malt, daß es einem ein Anliegen ist. Dann ist es wahr und wird kraftvoll.

In letzter Zeit male ich hauptsächlich im Atelier und genieße das Malen und Zeichnen mit Menschen. Mein Arbeitsprozess ist nun viel langsamer und arbeitsintensiver. Mir macht es Spaß und ich hoffe, Ihr erfreut Euch an den Zeichnungen.
