During my plein air workshop in the Wachau last August I took the opportunity to paint my students while they were painting. It was very exciting to paint people who didn´t pose.

Während meines PleinAir Workshops in der Wachau letzten August nützte ich die Gelegenheit meine Schüler beim Malen zu malen. Es war sehr spannend Menschen zu malen, die nicht posierten.

In the crypt | In der Gruft

Some of you might remember the coffin I painted some time ago ( see the label Decorative Painting) and before that I did a series of paintings in the Michaeler Crypt. Alexandra, who was in charge of the crypt, taking care of the restoration and doing the guided tours, commissioned me to do a portrait of her in her favourite environment. As an information for the technique geeks amongst you, it is painted only with Titanium White, Burnt Siena and Ultramarine Blue.

Einige erinnern sich vielleicht noch an den Sarg, den ich vor einiger Zeit bemalt habe ( zu sehen unter dem Suchwort Decorative Painting). Davor malte ich eine Serie von Bildern in der Michaeler Gruft. Alexandra, die in jener Zeit, sich um die Gruft und deren Erhaltung kümmerte und Führungen machte, beauftragte mich Ihr Portrait in Ihrer natürlichen Umgebung zu malen. Als Information für die Technik Freaks unter Euch, für dieses Bild verwendete ich nur Titanweiss, Siena Gebrannt und Ultramarin Blau.

The Red Corsage pt 1 | Die Rote Corsage Teil 1

In order to stay tuned on my blog I am going to show the process of my latest adventure. In the previous post was the drawing of that painting. Here you see the two sketches and the beginning of the big canvas. I had forgotten to take a picture of the drawing which was first done in charcoal and restated with white and raw umber. The smaller sketch was done in order to make the color concept clearer.

Um wieder aktiver auf meinem Blog zu sein, zeige ich den Fortgang meines aktuellen Malabenteuers. Im vorhergegangenen Eintrag war die Zeichnung des Ölgemäldes. Hier kommen zwei Ölskizzen und der Beginn der großen Leinwand. Ich vergaß ein Foto des Anfangszustandes zu machen, indem ich die Zeichnung mit Kohle gemacht und dann später mit Weiß und Umbra Natur verstärkt habe. Die kleinere Skizze machte ich um mir das Farbkonzept besser zu veranschaulichen.

Back again | Wieder zurück

I must apologise for not being so present on my blog as I used to be, but sometimes life keeps other things in store for you than you would like or expect. It is a complete and utter miracle how people are able to paint every day.

My summer was miserable with loads of doubts and uncertainty concerning my work. I thought of my landscape paintings as being more commercial than the other work I did. But it wasn´t! Even the thought that something might sell better or not, is ridiculous. The only thing that counts is that whatever you paint, it has to be important to oneself and then will be true and strong.

Recently I am working mostly in my studio and enjoy painting and drawing people. My whole process is now slower and more laborious. And I do like it and hope you enjoy these drawings.

Ich möchte mich für meine längere Abwesenheit von meinem Blog entschuldigen. Manchmal hält einem das Leben Situationen bereit, die einen etwas aus der gewohnten Bahn werfen. Deswegen ist es mir rätselhaft, wie Leute jeden Tag malen können.

Ich hatte einen unerquicklichen Sommer mit vielen Unsicherheiten und Zweifeln, was meine Arbeit angeht. Ich dachte meine Landschaften wären etwas kommerzieller als die Gemälde, die ich sonst mache. Ich irrte! Jedoch schon der Gedanke, ob sich etwas verkauft oder nicht, ist an sich schon unsinnig. Das Wichtigste ist, egal was man malt, daß es einem ein Anliegen ist. Dann ist es wahr und wird kraftvoll.

In letzter Zeit male ich hauptsächlich im Atelier und genieße das Malen und Zeichnen mit Menschen. Mein Arbeitsprozess ist nun viel langsamer und arbeitsintensiver. Mir macht es Spaß und ich hoffe, Ihr erfreut Euch an den Zeichnungen.

Portrait WIP

Thought you might enjoy another Work in Progress (WIP). I struggled a lot with the shadows, when I finally moved the lamp in order to achieve a different shadow under the nose.

Ich dachte mir verschiedene Stadien des Enstehungsprozesses (WIP) zu zeigen, wäre in diesem Fall mal wieder interessant. Ich mühte mich sehr mit der Lichtsituation und fand schlussendlich die Lösung, indem ich den Scheinwerfer veränderte, um einen anderen Schatten unter der Nase zu bekommen.

Here is a painting I was working on in Spring. It took us several weeks to complete and I haven´t done such an amitious work for a long time.

Dies ist ein Gemälde an dem ich im Frühjahr gemalt habe. Zur Fertigstellung brauchten wir einige Wochen und ich hatte lange kein so aufwendiges Bild mehr gemacht.

Macedonia Episode 2

Here is a little Work in Progress, you might enjoy to see. During that painting an older woman came up to me and wanted to invite me to some coffee, but I refused because of the fleeting light. After some minutes she returned and brought me some candies. The villagers were so friendly.

Hier zeige ich die Entstehung eines Bildes, was für den Einen oder Anderen interessant sein könnte. Während ich dies malte kam eine ältere Dame her und lud mich zum Kaffee ein, ich lehnte dankend ab, da das Licht sich so schnell änderte und ich das Bild fertigstellen wollte. Jedoch kam sie nach ein paar Minuten und schenkte mir einige Bonbons (Zuckerln). Die Dorfbewohner waren so freundlich.

Macedonia Episode 1

For the past two weeks I had been to Belcista / Macedonia, where I had been to an Artist Colony in the vicinity of Ohrid with the famous Ohrid lake. There were thirteen artist, working in many different styles and it was a pleasure meeting and working with them.
I took my cigar box easel with me and painted mostly 15 x 20 cm (6 x 8 in) panels.
Here you will see the photos.

In den letzten zwei Wochen weilte ich in Belcista / Mazedonien, wo ich in einer Künstler Kolonie, in der Nähe von Ohrid mit dem berühmten Ohrid See war. Wir waren dreizehn Künstler, mit unterschiedlichsten Arbeitsweisen und es war eine große Freude, miteinander zu malen und sich kennenzulernen.
Ich hatte meine Zigarrenschachtel Malkiste mit und malte hauptsächlich kleine Formate in der Größe 15 x 20 cm (6 x 8 in)

The Cowboy Poet

During my recent portrait workshop I asked our favourite model Andreas to wear something on his head, he brought this one. It was great fun to do these.

Zu meinem letzten Portrait Workshop fragte ich Andreas, unser Lieblingsmodell, ob er eine Kopfbedeckung mitbringen könnte. Diesen Hut setzte er auf und es machte viel Spaß diese Bilder zu malen.

The Urania and a quick sketch | Die Urania und eine schnelle Skizze

Michael and I went on a painting tour again. There were changing weather conditions and we painted at the Danube canal where I chose the Urania as subject. It is an observatory, a cinema and cultural venue. After that we drove through the city without finding decent motive. So we ended in a café where I did the quick sketch of Michael. In Vienna everything is better with a cup of coffee!

Michael und ich waren wieder auf Maltournee. Das Wetter war wechselhaft und wir malten am Donaukanal. Ich wählte die Urania als Motiv. Es sind dort eine Sternwarte, ein Kino und Kultureinrichtungen untergebracht. Danach fuhren wir etwas planlos durch die Stadt, ohne ein geeignetes Motiv zu finden. Schlußendlich landeten wir in einem Kaffeehaus, wo ich die Ölskizze von Michael anfertigte. In Wien geht alles besser bei einer Schale Kaffee!

Sun in the City

I went with my PA Buddy Michael Ornauer (here is his painting) to the Stadtpark to paint the first one and in the afternoon I tried to capure a person in front of a Henry Moore Sculpture on the Karlsplatz.

Das erste Bild malte ich mit meinem Freiluft Kumpano Michael Ornauer ( hier ist sein Bild) am Stadtpark. Am Nachmittag versuchte ich eine Person vor der Henry Moore Skulpur am Karlsplatz malerisch festzuhalten.

The first of the season | Das Erste der Saison

These are the two entrances of a tube station, the one further away had been designed by Otto Wagner in the 19. century and the nearer one is a beauty from the seventies.

Auf dem Bild sieht man zwei Eingänge zu einer U-Bahn Station. Der Hintere ist von Otto Wagner aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und der Vordere ist eine Schönheit aus den Siebzigern.

Recently I started doing these charcoal drawings. The first one is of my mother and she is the toughest person to paint or draw, because she is very critical about the way she looks on the drawing and she apparently shows no respect to the "famous painter son". :-))

Seit kurzem zeichne ich wieder verstärkt mit Kohle. Die erste Zeichnung stellt meine Mutter dar, welche auch die am schwierigsten zu zeichnende Person ist, die es gibt. Sie ist so kritisch mit Ihrem Konterfei und zeigt dem "berühmten Maler-Sohn" keinerlei Respekt. :-))

The Draftsman and Roman Heads

The draftsman on the painting is my fellow artist Michael Ornauer, who was so kind to pose for me. It was great fun to nail down the situation as quick as possible. The Roman heads turned out too orange because I used an LED light on my easel, which produced blue light. So the whole color balance shifted. A nice effect!

Der Zeichner im Bild ist mein Kollege Michael Ornauer, der sich freundlicherweise in mein Motiv setzte. Es machte viel Spaß die Situation so schnell als möglich zu erfassen. Für das Bild mit dem Römerköpfen verwendete ich eine LED Lampe mit zu blauen Licht, welches die orange Tönung hervorrief. Somit veränderte sich die ganze Farbstimmung. Ein netter Effekt!
